My Book Review of Playing with Fire

Posted on

Good morning.  Today I am doing a book review of a book I have just finished reading. It was written by Tess Gerritsen who is one of my favourite authors, and is called "Playing with Fire".

It is about a mum called Julia, who lives in America, and thinks her three year old daughter has turned against her and is trying to kill her.

The story starts with Julia, who is a musician and plays the violin, looking at books in an old book shop in Rome.  She came across an italian edition of a book called Gipsy full of different tunes.  As Julia looked through the book, a paper manuscript fell out with musical notes written in pencil on it, which was not actually part of the book.  The composition title was "Incendio" and it was composed by L.Todesco.  Julia bought the book as well as the manuscript and travelled back home to America.

A couple of days after arriving home, Julia got out the manuscript and started to play her violin.  It was a mournful melody.  Somehow Julia's cat ended up dead with Julia's daughter holding a garden trowel with the cats blood on it.

The second time Julia played the manuscript music, her daughter stabbed her in the leg with a shard of glass.

From then on, the story unfolds.  Julia's husband wants her to see a psychiatrist as her behaviour is bothering him. The story then goes back in time to talk about Lorenzo Todeso (the composer of the music).  Then we are back to Julia's story who ends up back in Venice trying to find out more about the music manuscript.

I do not want to give too much away and spoil reading the book for you.  The ending has a twist to it which I did  not see coming.  It is well worth a read as are all of Tess Gerritsen's books.
